Greetings to you, today we are going to talk a little more about the beautiful greeting “Namaste”, which you surly know is often used in the yoga world.
This Sanskrit word has a deeper and symbolic meaning. It holds a special place in the hearts of yoga practitioners and symbolizes the essence of connection, respect and unity.
At its core, “Namaste” means more than a simple greeting and farewell. It is an acknowledgement of the divine spark that resides within each of us. So when someone says “Namaste” or uses the gesture associated with it, they are acknowledging the presence of this divine energy within themselves and also within the person they are greeting.
The literal translation of “Namaste” is explained as “I bow to you.” Its true meaning, however, transcends these words. It is a gesture of humility and recognition of the sacred connection that exists between all living beings. When you say “Namaste,” you are expressing gratitude and respect for another person’s presence, their inner light, and their journey.
In the context of yoga, “Namaste” is an expression that unifies and bridges the gap between the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga practice. It symbolizes the unity of body, mind and spirit. When people come together for yoga practice, “Namaste” then serves as a reminder that we are all on this journey together, seeking growth, healing and self-discovery.
The physical gesture involves placing the palms of the hands together near the heart centre and forming what is known as the “Añjali Mudra”. Joining the palms together in front of the chest expresses entering the heart, kindness and peace. The position of the hands is reminiscent of a flower or a lotus bud. It also symbolizes the connection of our hemispheres, creating harmony between the left and right sides of the body, balance and unity.
During Namaste, we keep our eyes closed and our head slightly bowed. This gesture reflects humility, respect and creates a deep connection between individuals.
In today’s world, where we can often feel rushed and disconnected, “Namaste” offers a moment of pause and awareness of the present moment. It reminds us to see the goodness, the divine essence in ourselves and others, and to approach ourselves and people with respect and an open heart. “Namaste” thus actually expresses the essence of yoga – unity, harmony, and celebration of a shared journey towards self-awareness and inner peace.
One little word and it encompasses so much beauty♡
